CarMax is in the midst of building a 50,000-square-foot sales center at 2070 Stafford Way off of Del. 273 near Newark, with its first presence in Delaware set to open this winter.
The Richmond, Va.-based firm competes with new car dealerships and also is the nation’s largest retailer of used cars.
CarMax operates 122 superstores in 61 markets, and soon will add Delaware to its locator map, wooing customers with its “no haggle, no hassle” sales policy.
“We’re excited ... the Newark area is a new market for CarMax,” said Steven J. Hudak, CarMax’s real estate manager. “We’re always on the lookout for sites in strong retail, and/or, auto corridors that can serve customers who are not currently being reached with the unique CarMax experience.”
CarMax continues to grow at a time when clipping coupons and stretching dollars is the “new normal” for many consumers.
CarMax’s journey started about 20 years ago in Richmond after the firm surveyed thousands of consumers to understand their likes and dislikes in purchasing a vehicle, the second-most costly transaction to buying a home.
The end result, CarMax, as consumers know it today, is a retailer that purchases cars, whether a seller buys one or not, offers a huge selection of domestic and imported vehicles, extended service plans, multiple financing options, and a website with an inventory of more than 35,000 cars that can be transferred to a center for a fee.
It also offers a 30-day limited warranty and five-day money-back guarantee, while marking vehicles with haggle-free prices where what you see is what you pay.
Last year, the publicly traded company sold 447,728 cars on the retail level and another 324,779 wholesale vehicles at in-store auctions.
Whether CarMax will expand its presence in Delaware beyond Newark remains to be seen, but the firm did say it will continue to identify areas that fit its growth and customer needs. Until then, Delawareans can shop online at carmax.com or drive to Lancaster, Pa., or one of multiple sites in Maryland or New Jersey.
